A Baby Shower Story

According to the doctor, I'm due in two weeks. Due for what, I'm not sure. But it sure is getting cramped in here. I just got back from my baby shower. My mom's really tired so she's lying down. But I'm still kicking. How about I tell you about the shower. It's a great story.

"Are you ready to go to your baby shower?" my mom asks, buckling us into the car. She's always talking to me, filling me in on daily events. My baby shower, yippee! Just last week we went to my moms' friends' baby shower so I know how much fun they are. Let me just adjust my periscope here and I won't miss a thing.

When we enter the party, I'm thrilled to see pink and white balloons. Red, white and pink roses and carnations are everywhere in large baby bottles that are serving as vases. They remind me of the baby shower invitation I saw at home. It was a baby bottle filled with pink jellybeans with a note tied to the bottleneck.

While we walk around and mingle with guests, everyone wants to rub my moms tummy. It makes me a little nauseous. I have a good baby shower idea. No touching the stomach. But my mom doesn't seem to mind.

We sit down on a couch and all of the guests are smiling and asking my mom lots of questions. She answers them all, except the one I'm most anxious about. My name. Is it a secret? No. She just doesn't know yet. Well I hope she figures it out soon. One of the women, I think it's the hostess, starts talking. She says it's time to start some baby shower games and hands everyone a clothespin with a pink bow on it. The object of the game is not to say the word "baby". If you do, someone can take your clothespin. At the end of the baby shower, whoever has the most clothespins wins. A second later my mom loses her clothespin. I'm glad she's talking about me.

While my mom is talking to the woman next to her, I look around the room. Baby shower gifts are piled up in a corner. There is a hand-made baby blanket draped over a nearby chair. The blanket is pink with tiny roses and it looks very cozy. Homemade baby shower gifts are often the most cherished. There's also an oversized pink teddy bear holding a basket of rattles, bibs, baby blankets, booties and onesies. Boy, am I one lucky baby! There sure is a lot of pink though, hmmm.

The hostess announces that lunch is served and everyone walks to a buffet table. There is lots of delicious food including finger sandwiches, Caesar salad, scones, strawberries and cream and banana bread (my moms favorite.) I spy a cake at the end of the table. Too bad I can't have any yet. Sticking with the baby bottle theme, the cake is in the shape of, you guessed it, a baby bottle. There are small frosted roses around the perimeter and the words Best Baby Wishes are on top.

After lunch it's time for another baby shower game. The hostess brings out a tray of baby bottles filled with guava juice (pink again) and explains this game is a race to see who can drink the bottle the fastest. Each guest takes a turn and is timed with a stop watch. When the first player begins there is a lot of laughing. It takes a lot longer than anyone expected. I hope no one laughs at me when it's my turn. Finally, a winner is crowned and they receive a special gift.

Next, my mom gets to open all the presents. I'm fascinated by the sound of the wrapping paper and my mom loves what's inside each box. There are several unique baby shower gifts, including "A day in the life" gift - baby items from bath time (a hooded towel and wash cloths) to lunchtime (sipper cups) to sleep time (cute pink polka dot pajamas..) A free membership in a "dinner of the month" club was another unique baby shower idea. This gift entitled my family to one home made three-course dinner delivered to our home each month for a year. Everyone thought it was a great idea for a new mom. And my aunt gave us a personalized mobile to hang over my crib. Each hanging item was a picture of a family member. My mom almost started to cry after this gift. There were also plenty of baby supplies and necessities given. Overall, I'd say I made out pretty well.

We indulged in cake next. My mom had a huge piece. Then we were all surprised when my dad showed up wearing a bathrobe, shower cap and slippers and holding a bar of soap. "I'm here for a shower," he said. Everybody laughed. I think he just came for cake.

Before guests started to leave, a gift was given to the clothespin game winner. All guests were given a baby shower favor. It was a small handled basket filled with everything pink - a bubble gum cigar, tiny picture frame, jellybeans and soft cashmere socks. Even my mom got one. She hugged and thanked the hostess for her great baby shower ideas and we went on our way.
