Close Call Brought Tears To My Eyes
My wedding involved a lot of tears during the ceremony but most of them were mine. My intended and I were to be married on the cliffs overlooking the ocean in a beautiful little park in Shell Beach California at sunset. The setting was breathtaking. The gazebo was tastefully decorated with ferns and wildflowers. Soft music played in the background as our guests watched my fiancé and I approach the gazebo where the minister stood. As we took our places, out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of my eight year old son. He stood off behind the minister and to the left so I could easily continue to watch him lean over the too short railing. Being the typical inquisitive little boy he was craning his neck to get a better look at something down below the cliffs. As the minister began to speak my eyes welled with tears as I prayed my son wouldn't take one step closer to the edge of the cliff. The vows seemed to drag on forever as I twirled my fingers motioning to the minister to speed things up a bit. He seemed startled by my impatience but obliged by talking faster and faster as I kept motioning him to speed it up. My son was oblivious to the ceremony as all eyes were on us and no one paid any attention to his impending demise. At that time another child joined him and they were both teetering on the edge of the loose rocks watching some elephant seals below. The minister was reciting gibberish at lightening speeds as the guests started laughing, my soon to be husband looked at the minister as though he had lost his mind. I was sobbing and as soon as the minister said "I pronounce you man and wife" or at least that's what I thought he might have said. I lept over the railing of the gazebo bolted for my son and his friend with one giant swoop and scooped them both up, one under each arm. I figure that if I was able to find a decent man that wanted to marry me and save two little boys all at the same time, the marriage was meant to be. My tears of grief turned into tears of joy. That was twenty-one years ago and we are still going strong.
