How to Choose a Wedding Consultant

As a the owner and operator of a very successful wedding and event planning company I think that there are many people who don't understand how valuable a wedding planner can be or even how to choose the right one. The most important question to ask is "how many weddings have you planned?" I find that many people who call themselves wedding planners may have planned there sisters wedding last year and now they feel they can call themselves a planner, so untrue.

Professional wedding planners have been doing it for at least 2 years and are usually accredited by some large organization, though this isn't always true. But there are many other questions to ask when choosing a wedding planner. Some of the questions I tell people to ask are:

1) Does the wedding planner have a minimum budget they work with?
Some planners will not work with very small, intimate weddings. This may rule them out for you from the start.

2) What is the process the consultant uses for determining your wants and needs?
A wedding planner should always have a list of questions or a process for getting to your dream wedding. They should not be creating their dream wedding they should be creating yours.

3) Does the wedding planner have relationships with vendors in your area?
The biggest benefit to using a wedding planner is the discounts they may be able to get you at the vendors you choose to use. Many people do not know this but because of the relationship the planner may have they may be able to obtain significant discounts you cannot get on your own.

4) Will the consultant help you with all aspects of your wedding, dress, invitations, etc…?
I find that there are lot of planners who do not have expertise in certain areas and may not be able to help you with all your needs. It is important that you find a planner that can help you with every aspect of your needs, not just ones they usually handle.

The most important thing about all of this is for you to feel very comfortable with turning your wedding over to this person. This is one of the most important days of your life and you want to make sure that the person you turn it over to is competent, organized and resourceful. They should also involve you as much as possible, this is still your day no matter who is handling the details.
