Indian Key State Historic Site
Indian Key State Historic Site is an island within the Florida State Park system located just a few hundred yards southeast of U.S. Route 1 within the Florida Keys. The site has an extensive history, having served as the county seat for Dade County beginning in 1836, with a population reaching about 100 people. The island was attacked by a band of over 100 Seminole Indians on August 7, 1840. Most of the inhabitants survived, but some were killed, and the buildings on the island were destroyed.
The island is now uninhabited, but is frequently visited by tourists, and is the subject of an archaeological project to uncover the historic building foundations.
