Key Colony Beach is a city in the middle Florida Keys, Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 788 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 852 [1].
Geography
Key Colony Beach is located at 24°43′28″N, 81°1′5″W (24.724515, -81.017928)GR1. Most of the city is located on an island formerly known as Shelter Key; some parts of the city are on Fat Deer Key.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.7 km² (0.7 mi²). 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (23.88%) is water.
Demographics
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 788 people, 422 households, and 253 families residing in the city. The population density was 596.6/km² (1,549.8/mi²). There were 1,293 housing units at an average density of 978.9/km² (2,543.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.11% White, 0.51% African American, and 0.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.44% of the population.
There were 422 households out of which 8.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.9% were married couples living together, 3.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% were non-families. 31.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.87 and the average family size was 2.25.
In the city the population was spread out with 7.6% under the age of 18, 3.6% from 18 to 24, 14.3% from 25 to 44, 36.8% from 45 to 64, and 37.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 58 years. For every 100 females there were 99.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,577, and the median income for a family was $53,750. Males had a median income of $28,654 versus $27,143 for females. The per capita income for the city was $40,631. About 3.9% of families and 7.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 3.9% of those age 65 or over.
