When Sam Smith called in to On Air with Ryan Seacrest last week, he explained that he has always been more drawn to female singers, and in a new cover he takes on one of the greatest voices of all time.
During an appearance on Sirius XM, the “Stay With Me” singer perfected a cover of Whitney Houston‘s “How Will I Know” … and it completely breaths new life into the 1985 classic.

While Whitney’s original was more upbeat pop (relive it below), Sam’s rendition is more of a ballad and holds true to his own style.
“A Whitney Houston song that makes me happy — it’s a feel-good song,” he explained. “I love the juxtaposition of a melancholy lyric with an upbeat sound. People forget that’s how she rose to fame. The more mature Whitney, like ‘I Will Always Love You,’ came later.”
